Imagine for a moment you\u2019re driving home after a long day, and someone cuts you off, nearly causing an accident. What happens inside you? Does your blood boil? If your like me, the words that come to mind probably aren\u2019t exactly\u2026 holy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or maybe it\u2019s a coworker who spreads rumors about you, or a family member who betrayed your trust, or even someone who actively opposes your faith. In those moments, our natural response can be to curse, to retaliate, or to wish them harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But today, God invites us into something far more powerful. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Let\u2019s look at Romans 12:14. Paul writes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cBless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.\u201d <\/strong>(NIV)<\/p>\n\n\n\n This single verse is a game-changer. It\u2019s not a suggestion \u2014 it\u2019s a command that flies in the face of human nature. And if we live it out, it has the power to transform our lives, our relationships, and even the world around us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Romans 12 is Paul\u2019s blueprint for what everyday Christian living looks like. It begins with \u201coffer your bodies as a living sacrifice\u201d (v.1). Then he unpacks practical love: genuine affection, hospitality, harmony, and now blessing our persecutors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The word \u201cbless\u201d here comes from the Greek eulogeo \u2014 to speak well of, to invoke God\u2019s favor upon. It\u2019s the same root as the word \u201ceulogy.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul repeats it for emphasis: Bless\u2026 bless and do not curse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Jesus taught the same radical truth in Matthew 5:44: \u201cLove your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.\u201d<\/strong> Wow – love your enemies, pray for those who persecute you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Paul, who himself had persecuted the church before encountering Christ, knew this from experience. He went from breathing threats and even murder against Christians to becoming one of their greatest advocates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This command isn\u2019t just for ancient Roman persecution. It applies to every slight, every injustice, every difficult person in your life today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Why would God ask us to do something so hard? This does not come naturally for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Here is why: Because blessing others reflects the very heart of God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Think about Jesus on the cross. As nails pierced His hands and the crowd mocked Him, He prayed, \u201cFather, forgive them, for they know not what they do.\u201d He blessed those who were persecuting Him in the worst possible way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n History is filled with ordinary people who lived this out and changed everything:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Every time we bless instead of curse, we break the cycle of retaliation. When we release the offense into God\u2019s hands, we position ourselves to receive God\u2019s blessing \u2014 because the same measure we give is often the measure we receive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Blessing our persecutors doesn\u2019t mean we become doormats or ignore justice. It means we refuse to let hatred control our hearts. It means we trust God to fight our battles while we obey His command to love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So how do we actually do this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Friends, Romans 12:14 isn\u2019t asking us to do the impossible \u2014 it\u2019s inviting us into the supernatural life that only Christ makes possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In a world full of anger, division, and payback, imagine a community of people who consistently bless those who hurt them. That\u2019s revolutionary. That\u2019s attractive. That\u2019s Jesus shining through us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Today, I challenge you: Identify one person who has hurt or opposed you. Begin blessing them this week \u2014 in prayer, in words, in action. Watch what God does in their life\u2026 and in yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Let\u2019s pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for blessing us even when we were Your enemies. Fill us with Your love so we can bless those who persecute us. Help us choose grace over grudge, prayer over payback. May our lives preach the gospel through our responses.
