{"id":906,"date":"2012-02-03T14:10:09","date_gmt":"2012-02-03T14:10:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chadstutzman.net\/?p=906"},"modified":"2012-02-03T14:10:09","modified_gmt":"2012-02-03T14:10:09","slug":"contentment-leads-to-happiness","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chadstutzman.com\/?p=906","title":{"rendered":"Contentment Leads to Happiness"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/chadstutzman.net\/02\/2012\/contentment-leads-to-happiness\/lasting-happiness-concepts-1-2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-911\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-911 aligncenter\" title=\"Lasting-Happiness-concepts-1\" src=\"http:\/\/chadstutzman.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Lasting-Happiness-concepts-11-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What does contentment mean?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cContentment is realizing that God has already provided everything I need for my present and future happiness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the New Testament, the words content and contentment are translated from <em>arkeo, <\/em>which means \u201cto be satisfied; to be strong,\u201d and <em>autarkeia, <\/em>which means \u201cto need no aid or support; sufficiency of the necessities of life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee\u201d Hebrews 13:5.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Six Thoughts about Contentment:<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\">\n<li>Contentment is contrary to human nature and must be learned.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>\u201c<em>I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstance\u201d Philippians 4:11.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li>Contentment begins by knowing the purpose of Life.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>\u201cI want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in His sufferings, becoming like Him in His death\u201d Philippians 3:10.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li>Contentment requires distinguishing between needs and wants.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>\u201cBut if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that\u201d 1 Timothy 6:8<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cSo do not worry , saying, \u2018What shall we eat?\u2019 or \u2018What shall we drink?\u2019 or \u2018 What shall we wear?\u2019\u00a0 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.\u00a0 But seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.\u201d Matthew 6:31-33.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li>Contentment is based on a recognition of mutual need.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>\u201cMan does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God\u201d Matthew 4:4<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discontentment begins by desiring self-sufficiency.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>Genesis 3:1-6 <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Discontentment leads to covetousness (Greed).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u201c<em>Then He said to them, \u2018Watch out!\u00a0 Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man\u2019s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions\u201d\u00a0 Luke 12:15. <\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Covetousness produces idolatry.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><em>The Tenth Commandment Exodus 20:17<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li>Contentment is achieved by exchanging things for more of Christ.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things, I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ\u201d Philippians 3:8.<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cHe is no fool, who gives what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.\u201d Jim Elliot<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li>Contentment allows us to gain things of greater value.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>The Parable of the Sower.\u00a0 Matthew 13:18-23<\/em><\/p>\n<p>v\u00a0 <strong>Contentment is valuing God-given relationships more than earthly possessions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Matthew 26:6-16<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Mary of Bethany &amp; Judas<\/p>\n<p>v\u00a0 <strong>Contentment is realizing that I am indestructible until my work is done.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Book of Nehemiah<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Nehemiah<\/p>\n<p>v\u00a0 <strong>Contentment is avoiding the bondage of personal expectations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Joshua 7<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Achan<\/p>\n<p>v\u00a0 <strong>Contentment is rejoicing in the way that God designed me.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Luke 19:1-10<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Zacchaeus<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; What does contentment mean?
