{"id":935,"date":"2012-03-28T15:00:13","date_gmt":"2012-03-28T15:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/chadstutzman.net\/?p=935"},"modified":"2012-03-28T15:00:13","modified_gmt":"2012-03-28T15:00:13","slug":"three-keys-to-great-leadership","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/chadstutzman.com\/?p=935","title":{"rendered":"Three Keys to Great Leadership"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/chadstutzman.net\/03\/2012\/three-keys-to-great-leadership\/5940859-beautiful-business-couple-leading-their-team-isolated-over-a-white-background\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-936\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-936\" title=\"Leadership\" src=\"http:\/\/chadstutzman.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/5940859-beautiful-business-couple-leading-their-team-isolated-over-a-white-background-300x245.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"245\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I recently gave talks to small business owners and a local fire department about leadership.\u00a0 Leadership is vital in every business, every agency, every department, every school, every home and every church. As I thought about what to talk about I quickly zeroed in on three things that are keys to leading well.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Vision determines the direction of the Team &#8211; <\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Focusing on the future sets leaders apart!<\/strong>\u00a0 The capacity to imagine and articulate exciting future possibilities is the defining competence of leader\u2019s.\u00a0 Leader\u2019s are future oriented while managers are present oriented \u2013 You need both, but as a leader you need to be out in front.\u00a0\u00a0 If you are not very clear on your vision everyone around you will be even more uncertain.\u00a0 If you\u2019re a little fuzzy on what the future looks like, your employees, customers, suppliers and everyone else will have no idea what your vision is.<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0 <strong>A compelling vision drives an organization and attracts people.<\/strong>\u00a0 If your vision is not big enough you won\u2019t make much of a difference in your\u00a0\u00a0 community.\u00a0 What do you want people experience when they come into contact with your organization?\u00a0 How can you simplify your vision so it sticks?\u00a0\u00a0 A vision statement is not worth much if it\u2019s only words.\u00a0 Here is a vision statement I recently read that was pretty good:\u00a0\u00a0 Respect, Integrity, communication, and Excellence. \u2013 That was Enron\u2019s Mission statement.<\/li>\n<li><strong>A clear vision helps to focus a business<\/strong>.\u00a0 If you are all over the place pursuing everything that comes along, you will burn out your team and employees.\u00a0 They will be unclear of what the main thing is.\u00a0\u00a0 I call this <strong>side-ways energy<\/strong>, when you are pursuing good things instead of the best things.\u00a0 We talk about narrowing the focus where I work so that we don\u2019t get distracted trying to do everything.\u00a0 When you can focus on being really good at a few things you can make a bigger difference and be way better at it.\u00a0\u00a0 So what do you need to eliminate or stop doing that does not fit with your vision?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>2.\u00a0 <strong>Lead Yourself First &#8211; <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I heard Bill Hybels the leader of one of the largest churches in America say that a leader should spend 50% of his time leading himself.\u00a0 That seems like a lot, but when you think about it, it makes sense.\u00a0\u00a0 If you don\u2019t lead yourself well, you will not lead others well.\u00a0\u00a0 So here are some things we can all do to work on ourselves:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Know what your strengths are and what your weaknesses are.<\/strong>\u00a0 Work in your area of strength as much as possible and surround yourself with people to do what you are not good at.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/michaelhyatt.com\/life-plan\"><strong>Develop a Life Plan<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Identify the 5-8 most important areas of your life and then develop some goals for each of those areas.\u00a0 Do this for your personal life first and then do it for your work.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/review\/list\/3053761-chad-stutzman?shelf=currently-reading\"><strong>Read Books<\/strong><\/a> \u2013 Leaders are readers.\u00a0 I try to read at least one book a month.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meet with People<\/strong> \u2013 Find mentors, people that you can meet with and learn from.\u00a0 Find people that are great leaders and talk to them, learn from them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hire a Coach<\/strong> \u2013 Executive coach, Life Coach.\u00a0 They challenge you, hold you accountable, push you.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Form a group<\/strong> \u2013 Peer groups, Book study Group, Accountability group.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Go to conferences or seminars<\/strong> \u2013 be strategic.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cometocatalyst.com\/\">Catalyst Conference<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Emotional Health, Physical Health, Spiritual Health<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Fears, Hang-ups, bad habits.\u00a0 We all have things we need to deal with and work on.\u00a0 Sometimes we need to get help\n<ul>\n<li>A Counselor, a personal trainer, a pastor\/mentor.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>3.\u00a0<strong> Make Developing Others a Priority.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The last thing I want to share with you tonight is to develop others.\u00a0\u00a0 This is one of the things I am most passionate about.\u00a0 Helping other people grow.\u00a0 I really believe that the more value you add to the people around you to more successful you will be.\u00a0\u00a0 When you can wake up every day and think about how you can serve and develop the people around you, you will be more energized and your business will thrive.\u00a0\u00a0 So what do I mean when I say to develop others.\u00a0 Here are some thoughts on that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It first starts with you being the right kind of example<\/strong>.\u00a0 As a leader people are watching you.\u00a0 They are asking themselves are you for real?\u00a0 Do you do what you say?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meet one-on-one<\/strong> \u2013 Meeting face to face and getting to know the person makes a huge difference.\u00a0 When people know you care about them, they will become a better employee or follower.\u00a0 You can\u2019t do this with everyone, but you should do it with some.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meet in groups<\/strong> \u2013 Form book study groups with your high potentials or your entire team.\u00a0 I just did this book with my team &#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/QBQ-The-Question-Behind-Accountability\/dp\/0399152334\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1332946112&amp;sr=8-1\"> QBQ The Question Behind the Question.<\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Take them on field trips with you<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Send them to seminars and conferences<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Encourage them to develop a life plan, meet with people, read books etc.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hire a trainer to come work on areas that are important.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Listen<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Do those three things well and you will excel as a leader no matter where you are leading.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently gave talks to small business owners and a local fire department about leadership.\u00a0 Leadership is vital in every business, every agency, every department, every school, every home and every church.
